Title: Forever Yesterday, Part Three: A World for the Winning
Writer: Fabian Nicieza
Penciler: Mark Bagley
Synopsis:
The Mutant Liberation Force, along with Nova, face off against the
Sphinx. During the battle Sayge comes to Nova, Firestar, and
Marvel Man. Nova and Sayge tell them that the Sphinx has altered
reality and that in the true reality they were teammates. At the
Chrysler building, home of the Sphinx, Dwayne Taylor impersonates a
systems analyst in order to gain entrance. When he reaches the
top floor he attacks the two guards in an armor that closely resembles
the armor he wears in the true reality. While in the Sphinx's
home he sees on television monitors that a war has broken out
involving the Sphinx, the mutant rebels, and the Atlanteans who are
disrupting the flow of oil in the Persian gulf. Dwayne also
notices the Sphinx's cat, which he realizes is the cat the the
original Sphinx had bestowed mortality upon in order to give her
something to remember him by. He decides to use the cat to get
back at the Sphinx. The Sphinx, realizing that someone has
invaded her home, leaves the battle against the MLF, leaving the
Avengers to fight the Mutants. Firestar, Marvel Man, and Nova go
after the Sphinx when they realize that she has returned to the
Chrysler Building. In Springdale, Aknatonikutt, Robbie Baldwin
is playing catch with a friend when the Hulk, who was hit by the
Sphinx in Maqaman Island, lands on the street and bounces right in
front of them. Robbie Baldwin states that he wishes he could
bounce like the hulk just did. Back at the Chrysler Building,
the Sphinx is attacking Dwayne Taylor for attempting to harm her
cat. Nova, Firestar, and Marvel Man arrive just in time to save
Dwayne. Nova then realizes that the cat is the key to making her
realize the truth. Nova catches and threatens to kill the cat if
she does not change the world back to it's proper reality. Just
then, Sayge appears and tries to reveal the truth to the Sphinx.
She attempts to destroy Sayge, but finds that she cannot destroy the
truth. The Sphinx realizes what she has done and reverts the
world back to it's proper reality in exchange for the cat. Nova,
Firestar, Marvel Boy, and Night Thrasher stand before her, barely
remembering what had just happened, as if it were a dream. The
Sphinx's cat then crumbles to dust because the lie it symbolized could
not belong in this reality. The Sphinx leaves embittered by her
defeat and vows that the Warriors have made a new enemy and that she
has all of time to plan her revenge.
