Name: Jubilation Lee
Identity: Secret
Membership Status: Active
Other Aliases: Jubilee
Other Affiliations: X-Men (former), Generation-X (former), X-Corps (former)
Relatives: Mr. And Mrs. Lee (parents), deceased; Hope (aunt)
Powers: As Wondra, Jubilee wears specifically designed gauntlets that give her superhuman strength and limited invulnerability. Even though the level of strength Wondra possesses is unclear, she has been seen lifting up the engine of a freight train as well as an automobile. She also utilizes hover discs, which enable her to fly.
Prior to losing her powers, Jubilee harnessed the mutant power of energy manipulation. This uncanny ability allowed her to generate and emit pure light-energy in the form of globes, sparks, and streams. These ‘fireworks,’ as she called them, obeyed her mental command and could vary from blinding distractions to powerful explosions that could level buildings. Although the upper level of Jubilee’s former powers were not tested, it was stated that she had the power to detonate matter at an atomic level. As a mutant, Jubilation also had the unnoticed gift of mental invisibility, allowing her to hide from psionic and robotic scans.
Abilities: Wondra has years of training and live combat experience as a former member of the X-Men and Generation X, and as a sidekick to Wolverine. She also harnesses several other talents which are useful to her on the field. Jubilee is a class-A gymnast with near-Olympic potential, is competent in First Aid and CPR, and is skilled as a once-petty thief.
History: Born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee, Jubilation Lee was opulently raised in Beverly Hills, California. Although Chinese at birth, the young woman was an American citizen at heart, becoming an avid fan and follower of teen pop culture. Most of her free time was spent with her friend, Cynthia Jennifer, in which they would frequent the local malls and gallerias. Jubilee also excelled at sports in her youth, becoming an Olympic-caliber gymnast and an avid roller-blader. It seemed as if her world was served to her on a silver platter, that is, until the unthinkable happened. After shopping with her friends on an average afternoon, Jubilation returned to find a squadron of police officers at her home. Her parents were dead.Scared, alone, and confused, the girl ran away from a temporary foster family and made a safe haven for herself in a local Los Angeles mall. Jubilee was forced by circumstance to share her secret with the world in order to survive. She was a mutant, with the ability to explosively charge molecules in order to create blinding light and explosive force by mere thought. Jubilee decided to utilize this gift in the form of ‘fireworks’ performances, dazzling mall patrons with flashing lights and whistling streamers. She also trained herself to become a petty thief in order to make ends meet, which was far different than her life as an heiress and daughter.
Around her early teens, Jubilee had grown used to a life of running from authorities. Mall security would have it otherwise, though, as they hired a novice group of mutant hunting scientists known as the ‘M-Squad.’ After dodging the police and scientists with her brilliant powers and awe-inspiring gymnastics, she was outnumbered and trapped. Luckily for her, The X-Women known as Storm, Psylocke, Dazzler, and Rogue took a portal that was made by Gateway in order to go shopping. They became noticed of Jubilee’s peril, and came to her rescue. Thinking to herself that her life couldn’t get any worse, Jubilation decided to secretly follow the X-Women through their portal, and back to the X-Men’s Australian outback mansion.
Unbeknownst to any of the mutants besides Gateway, Jubilee used her stealth to steal food and hide away in the subbasement of the mansion. It was here that she was attacked by a cybernetic dog that belonged to the Reavers. This was also the first time in which her powers were of actual use to her, since in self defense she blew up the dog before it could kill her. Exploring the basement tunnels, she came across the one man that would change her life. It was Wolverine, a feral beast of a man with razor claws and healing abilities. He was mercilessly beaten and left for dead on a cross. Even though she was frightened, Jubilee acted upon instinct and rescued the man, escaping with him while being followed by Lady Deathstrike and her Reaver army.
Jubilee nursed Wolverine back to health, and the two became a team of sorts. Wolverine was the tough and ruthless killer, while Jubilee was the compassionate yet inexperienced mutant. They were perfect for one another, and formed a much needed father-daughter bond that helped each other cope with their past. The two traveled to Madripoor, and in the process were kidnapped by Mandarin, along with Logan’s old friend Psylocke. Brainwashed and exhausted from their travels and defeat, Jubilee panicked and sent forth a surge of explosive energy, which freed the trio and blew up the Mandarin’s mansion. Logan, Jubilee, and Psylocke continued their travels in Asia, fighting and outsmarting enemies such as The Hand Ninja, Sabertooth, the Hunter, and Lady Deathstrike.
Wolverine realized that Jubilee was in need of a family, and decided to introduce her to Professor Xavier and the X-Men. Almost immediately afterwards, the X-Men were transported to the Shi’ar Empire in Outer Space by Xavier’s friend Lilandra. Mistaken as enemies, the X-Men were forced to fight for their freedom. If it wasn’t for the help of newcomers Jubilee and Gambit, the team would have been defeated and left for dead. Once transported back to earth, both Jubilee and Gambit were immediately recognized as full-fledged X-Men.
While with the X-Men, Jubilee trained in the Danger Room to hone her skills, fighting simulations against a modified version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In actual combat, despite being the youngest member of the team, the Asian American firecracker aided the team in their battles against Sentinel robots, Magneto, Omega Red, Mojo, and the Brotherhood. Surprisingly enough, when the X-Men were attacked and defeated by Sauron, a pterodactyl-man with hypnotic powers, Jubilee was the only mutant left standing. She took him down with a series of blinding and concussive flashes, which in turn saved the X-Men.
On an outing with Wolverine, Jubilee helped him take down a swarm of Sentinel robots that were bent on destroying the world with a massive blast. The pair called all of their training from within, slicing and frying the robots with their mutant abilities. It was here that Jubilee became aware of a startling amount of information. The death of her parents was indeed the result of two men, Reno and Molokai, who killed them on Mulholland Drive. Furious, she hunted the culprits down with the help of Wolverine. She blew up their guns, knocked them out with her fists, and stopped short of killing them with her powers, as Logan advised her that it would scar her for life.
A while later, her friend Wolverine lost his adamantium skeleton and became feral. For Jubilee’s safety, Wolverine left the X-Men for a brief period of time. Vulnerable, the girl was tormented by Sabertooth during his ‘stay’ at the X-Mansion. With the help of Bishop, Jubilee defeated the beast in a fight that could have killed the two heroes. Shortly thereafter, Jubilation was forced to watch helplessly as another loved one passed away. Illyana Rasputin was killed due to a virus that plagued mutants at the time.
Bad luck decided to stick around, as mutants all around the world were being attacked by a cybernetic group of humans known as the Phalanx. Jubilee was forced to team up with Sabertooth, as well as Emma Frost and Banshee, in order to fend off the attacking Phalanx. They managed to rescue a number of teenage mutants in the process, but it seemed as if her psyche was all worn out from recent events.
Upon suggesting that the rescued teenage mutants be kept together to join a ‘training’ program, Jubilee offered up her status as an X-Man in order to form the team known as Generation X. Led by Banshee and Emma Frost, Jubilee would forefront the team of trainees, along with Synch, M, Chamber, Husk, Skin, and Penance. Although the team was like a family to her, Jubilee did not receive the rest and safety that she previously sought out.
During her stay with the team, a being known as Emplate became their biggest arch-nemesis. He used his invulnerability and leeching powers to overbear the teenagers on several occasions, until Jubilee could not take any more of his attacks while watching her team suffer. In a battle that almost spelled defeat for the Gen Xers, Jubilee awoke from a spell that Emplate placed on her and blew up Proudstar Hall of the Massachusetts Academy. This explosion knocked the villain unconscious, which settled the score between him and Generation X.
Evildoers were on the rise along with a growing fear and public view of mutants. One such being was Bastion, whose sole purpose was to rid the world of as much mutants as possible. On a raid of the academy, Bastion took Jubilee by surprise via a disguise and kidnapped her. She was held in captivity, along with several of the X-Men who were in a separate location, for a lengthy period of time. Bastion tried feverishly to force information out of Jubilee in regards to the X-Men, and after several probes and countless mental tortures, Jubilee gave in. Luck was on the mutants’ side, however, as Bastion’s assistant Daria aided Jubilation in her escape. The X-Men were also released from their prison when their former Asian American teammate pushed their holding cell button. Bastion was taken into captivity soon afterwards by agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Marking the highlight of her stay in Generation X, Jubilee discovered that Reno and Molokai, the men who killed her parents, were hired to do so by a man named Hunter Brawn. Having years of experience behind her belt, she undertook a solo operation in which she spied on and sent the man to justice, while blowing up his warehouse in the process with a charged fireworks explosion.
Soon afterwards, Generation X was closed down. Emma Frost’s sister had placed a bomb in the school, which claimed the life of Everett Thomas, aka Synch. Banshee was also distraught due to his own issues, as were the teens. Chamber was invited to join the X-Men, the girls went their separate ways, and Jubilee moved to LA with her good friend and teammate Skin. While living in LA, Jubilee found work as an aspiring actress, which was short lived. She also grew a strong bond with Skin.
The friendship of Jubilee and Skin was short and bittersweet. The two were kidnapped, brutalized, and hung on crosses, along with other mutants on the lawn of the Xavier Institute. The Church of Humanity took the lives of several mutants, including Skin. Jubilee and Magma, however, were saved due to the healing abilities of Warren Worthington II, Angel. When the X-Men took down the Church of Humanity, Jubilee decided to stay with the team. She was again with the love and support of family, most importantly her friends Chamber, Husk, and Wolverine. Jubilation joined them in their battle against Azazel and his demonic henchmen, which saved their fellow teammate Nightcrawler. She also mourned the death of Skin at his burial.
In a change of events, however, the X-Men teams were disbanded and Jubilee was left out of the group. She was then contacted by a newly discovered relative, her Aunt Hope. She moved to her old home of Beverly Hills to live with Hope, attending high school and working as a student advisor. As Jubilee’s luck would have it, though, Hope was involved with the mafia. While checking up on his former sidekick, Wolverine managed to save Jubilee during a mob fight that apparently claimed the life of her newly found Aunt Hope.
With all else lost, Jubilee was subject to the events of M-Day, in which Scarlet Witch cast a spell which de-powered most of the world’s mutants. Powerless and without a home in the X-Men, Jubilee found a job working at a shelter for ex-mutants. She was contacted by a masked man known as Night Thrasher in regards to joining a renegade group of heroes known as the New Warriors. Familiar with the young woman’s history, Night Thrasher asked that Jubilee be the field leader of the future team. She was kidnapped once again, though, by Omega Red. He used her as bait in order to fight Wolverine. During an explosion in the building that Jubilee was detained in, she suffered a near-fatal injury. With Omega Red detained, Wolverine gave up his freedom to S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents in order for them to save the life of his beloved friend.
Being back in good health, Jubilee took up Night Thrasher on his offer to help lead the New Warriors. She has since then taken up the guise of Wondra, utilizing technology to grant her superhuman strength, invulnerability, and flight. Wondra fights alongside the Warriors in order to keep the ideal of a non-registered and true superhero alive.
